How to remove background noise from a video on iPhone
Quick answer
Photos can reduce background noise only with Audio Mix, and only in videos recorded with Spatial Audio on iPhone 16 or later: open the video, tap Edit, tap Audio Mix and choose Studio or In-Frame. Photos has no noise control for other videos. For a video from an older iPhone, a screen recording or a clip from another app, use an app that removes noise from any video and saves a clean copy.
You can get clear speech out of a noisy video on your iPhone, but which tool works depends on how the video was recorded. Start by checking whether Apple's own tool covers your video. These steps are written for iOS 26.
Videos from iPhone 16 or later: Audio Mix in Photos
Apple's guide says Audio Mix is available when you record a video with Spatial Audio on iPhone 16 or later. If your video qualifies:
- Go to the Photos app and open the video.
- Tap the Edit button, then tap Audio Mix.
- Choose Studio to reduce background sounds and reverb, or In-Frame to reduce sounds and voices from sources not visible in the video.
- Drag the slider to set how strong the effect is, then tap Done.
There is no Audio Mix for a video recorded on an earlier iPhone, a video recorded in Stereo or Mono, a screen recording, or a clip you saved from another app or from someone else. Photos has no other noise control, so for those videos you need another tool.
Any other video: clean the sound with an app
A noise removal app takes the video you already have and gives you back a copy with clearer speech:
- Open the app and pick the video from your library.
- Let it process the sound, then play the result and compare it with the original.
- Save the clean copy to Photos and share that one.
Three things to check before you choose an app:
- Can you hear the result before paying? Some apps ask you to pay before you can hear the result on your own video.
- Does the picture stay the same? The best result swaps only the sound and leaves the video untouched.
- Does it keep music? Tools that isolate the voice remove everything else, music included. That is right for a talking video and wrong for a music video.
Next time: reduce noise while you record
- Get closer. The nearer the microphone is to the person talking, the less room the noise has.
- Use Voice Isolation. Apple says Voice Isolation prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noise. It works during FaceTime and phone calls and, on iOS 26, in recording apps such as Voice Memos. In Voice Memos, open Control Center, tap Voice Memos at the top, then select Voice Isolation.
- Leave Wind Noise Reduction on. On iPhone 16 or later, the Camera reduces wind noise automatically in Spatial Audio and Stereo video. See how to remove wind noise from a video.
Where Noise Remover & Voice Cleaner helps
Noise Remover & Voice Cleaner opens any video in your library, on any iPhone with iOS 26, and removes traffic, wind, fans, crowds and room noise on the iPhone itself. Play the whole video clean before you pay and switch between Original and Clean to compare. The clean copy goes to Photos with the picture unchanged, and the original stays as it is.
It keeps speech and removes everything else, music included. Previews are free at any length, and the first 30 seconds of every save are free, with no watermark.
Noise Remover & Voice Cleaner is coming soon to the App Store.
