How to remove wind noise from a video on iPhone

Updated by Winton Gee

Quick answer

On iPhone 16 or later, the Camera reduces wind noise while you record in Spatial Audio or Stereo, with Wind Noise Reduction in Settings > Camera > Record Sound. For a video already recorded, Photos can only help through Audio Mix, which needs a Spatial Audio video from iPhone 16 or later. For any other video, use an app that removes noise from the sound and saves a clean copy.

Wind is the loudest problem in outdoor video: gusts hit the microphone directly and bury the voice in rumble. You can fix it after recording, and on newer iPhones you can reduce it while you record. These steps are written for iOS 26.

While you record: Wind Noise Reduction

Apple's guide says that on iPhone 16 or later, wind noise is reduced automatically when you record video in Spatial Audio or Stereo. To check that it is on:

  1. Go to the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Camera, then tap Record Sound.
  3. Make sure Spatial Audio or Stereo is selected and Wind Noise Reduction is on.

It works only on new recordings, only on iPhone 16 or later, and not in Mono. It does nothing for a video you already have.

A video you already recorded

If the video was recorded with Spatial Audio on iPhone 16 or later, open it in Photos, tap the Edit button, tap Audio Mix and choose Studio, which Apple describes as reducing background sounds and reverb. Drag the slider to set the strength, then tap Done.

Any other video, from an older iPhone, a friend or another app, has no Audio Mix. For those, a noise removal app is the way to clean the sound:

  1. Open the app and pick the video from your library.
  2. Play the result and compare it with the original, especially in the windiest parts.
  3. Save the clean copy to Photos and share that one. Keep the original.

Wind that completely covers a word cannot be undone by any tool, because the word is no longer in the recording. Light and steady wind cleans up well; the strongest gusts may leave the voice thin for a moment.

Next time: keep the wind off the microphone

  • Turn your back to the wind so your body shields the iPhone's microphones.
  • Keep the microphones clear. Hold the iPhone so your fingers and case do not cover them.
  • Use a microphone with a wind cover, such as a clip-on microphone with a foam or fur windscreen, when you film outdoors often.

Where Noise Remover & Voice Cleaner helps

Noise Remover & Voice Cleaner removes wind, traffic and crowd noise from any video in your library, on any iPhone with iOS 26, and keeps the voice. Play the whole video clean before you pay, switch between Original and Clean to hear the difference, then save a copy to Photos with the picture unchanged.

It keeps speech and removes everything else, music included. For more on Apple's tools, see how to remove background noise from a video on iPhone.

Noise Remover & Voice Cleaner is coming soon to the App Store.
